bill clinton did the same thing in 1992 -- the democratic party had a negative image coming into that cycle for similar reasons. there was mismanagement, congress is doing a poor job in terms of congressional leadership. but he again casting new image of the democratic party, of what it represented and could be. that was the challenge for running coming into the election. the republican party brand will sell negative among independent voters that he needed to craft a reason for people to trust republicans, to give them the keys to the kingdom. i am not sure he ever really successfully did that. i think the first presidential debate was the moment where it started, and yet the potential to do it, but i think it was a bit late in the cycle to start rethinking the way the party would be viewed by people. ultimately i do not think it turned things around. the parties favorability rating is still much worse than the democratic party's favorability rating. people see the republican party pretty negatively, even a fair number of republican leading -- leaning voters. the evidence of that -- l
